Bainbridge Island Grocery Stores

Bainbridge Island Grocery Stores

For a small community, Bainbridge Island offers many options for grocery shopping. Neighborhood grocery stores, supermarkets, boutique specialty stores, and small convenience stores can be found across the island.

Bainbridge Island Grocery Stores:  Supermarkets

Town and Country

Nicknamed “T&C” by locals, Town & Country has served the community as Bainbridge Island’s first “Super” market since 1957. Truly a gourmet grocery store filled with organic, natural, and locally sourced food. T&C also offers rare, imported foods that are typically only found in small boutique stores.

Specialty offerings include a sushi bar, coffee shop, wood-fired pizzas, live shellfish, and ready-to-eat meals.

Safeway

Safeway is a large supermarket chain throughout the west coast and their Bainbridge Island grocery store is located on High School Road in Island Village. A traditional supermarket, they offer products from well-known corporate food companies, household goods, and more.

Specialty offerings include a Starbucks® coffee bar, a pharmacy, home grocery deliveries.

Bainbridge Island Grocery Stores: Neighborhood Markets

Walt’s Lynwood Market

Serving the south end of the island, this family-owned Bainbridge Island grocery store carries organic produce, groceries, and an extensive selection of craft beer and wine. A smaller, moderate sized store, their motto is: “We’re not a convenience store, we’re your local market that’s convenient.”

Specialty offerings include a deli, café, home grocery deliveries, and Walt himself serving burgers in the parking lot every Friday from 11am to 1pm.

Bay Hay and Feed Market

Bay Hay and Feed offers a great selection of groceries for a small, local market. Known mostly for their garden center, coffee shop, and farm supplies; their location in Rolling Bay makes them very convenient when you don’t want to drive far from home. The stock here is heavy on organic groceries, local sourcing, and gourmet offerings such as wild honey, artisanal cheeses, and wine.

Heyday Market

Heyday Market and Deli is located in Bainbridge Island’s historic Lynwood Center Village. They offer locally raised meats, eggs, and produce, and bread, beer, wine, and other grocery items.

Specialty offerings include artisanal sandwiches, rotisserie roasted meats, hot entrees, soups, stews, hot and cold side dishes, and prepared salads.

Bainbridge Neighborhood: Meadowmeer

Meadowmeer Neighborhood Bainbridge Island

Centrally located on Bainbridge Island, the Meadowmeer neighborhood offers a quiet but amenity-rich lifestyle. Primarily sited around the golf course, the Meadowmeer neighborhood was designed with form and function. Smaller streets and cul-de-sacs promote a safe place for walking, biking, and chalk art in the streets. Having an elevated altitude along the golf course, it is one of Bainbridge Island’s sunnier neighborhoods.

Home prices in the Meadowmeer neighborhood tend to be a more affordable option on Bainbridge Island, because it isn’t a waterfront neighborhood. You are surrounded by beauty however and a beach is never far away when you live on an island!

Golf

Meadowmeer Golf and Country Club is one of 3 major amenities in this neighborhood. The Golf course is a 9-hole semi-private golf course with a practice green, club rentals, pro-shop, and a restaurant with heated, outdoor dining. Most golfers play 18 holes from the different tee boxes on the back 9. The course was designed by Sam Clarke in 1971, built in 1972, and remains as a beautifully maintained and highly regarded golf course.

Fitness

Bainbridge Athletic Club

Bainbridge Athletic Club is a health and fitness club with activities for all ages. Programs are available for kids, teens, adults, and seniors. Members can enjoy 4 indoor tennis courts, cycling studio, specialized youth equipment, 2 large group exercise studios with over 35 classes to chose from, locker rooms with sauna and showers. You can also take part in nutritional and lifestyle counseling as well and massage. There is a pickleball court, of course, as pickleball was invented on Bainbridge Island. An outdoor seasonal pool rounds out the amenities.

Hiking

The Grand Forest Bainbridge Island

Grand Forest

The Meadowmeer neighborhood also borders the Grand Forest. The Grand Forest is a popular destination for trail users on Bainbridge Island. It encompasses 240-acres, with 8 miles of trails, under a lush canopy of firs, maples, and conifers. This is a runner, walker, and dog-friendly park!

Helpline House Bainbridge Island

Helpline House Bainbridge Island

I am currently reading Kristin Hannah’s newest book “The Four Winds”.  A Bainbridge Island resident and best-selling author, Ms. Hannah writes beautiful, historically-based fiction. The story revolves around farmers whose lives are turned upside down by the phenomenon called The Dust Bowl; the worst man-made ecological disaster in American history. They were proud, accomplished people who were not accustomed to receiving charity. It is a story about hardship, survival, and pulling together.

I found myself thinking of how COVID-19 has created so much economic hardship in the lives of so many of our friends and neighbors. Helpline House Bainbridge Island has been a vital part of our community for over 50 years. Their services have expanded over the years as the needs of our community have evolved. In addition to the myriad of services they offer, there is always an abundance of kindness.

“Coming here has been humbling, but not humiliating.”  Helpline House Client

Volunteering your time isn’t possible right now, but small financial donations add up quickly and make a world of difference. My Windermere colleagues and I have volunteered here for Windermere Community Service Day, and I hope we can return to that soon.

Ways You Can Help Through Donations

The Helpline House website has information on several ways to donate. Credit cards, PayPal, mailing address for donations made by check, and information on Legacy Donations.

Coffee Shops and Bakeries of Bainbridge Island

Coffee | Cupcakes | Chocolate | Comfort

Cold and rainy days always call for ways to find comfort and be soothed by hot coffee and baked goods, which means a good bakery is indispensable these days. From market classics serving up traditional French pastries to a variety of savory treats; the shops on this list are a beacon of crispy, flakey, sugary hope.

When it comes to coffee and tea, Bainbridge Island has many tried-and-true industry veterans, solid neighborhood cafes, and a few quirky spots that contribute to our love of our unique dining experiences.

I am not a coffee drinker, so I have learned to order a complicated hot chocolate, so I feel like I fit in the NW. Because my expertise is not in coffee, I will share with you that the absolute best hot chocolate is available at L’ATELIER TR. Located in an industrial area, they have become a true destination bakery with offerings like handmade Belgian chocolates, sweet and savory waffles, cakes, and European pastries. Not the most elegant space, but oh, so good.

Downtown Winslow

Blackbird Bakery

A perennial favorite among local and tourists alike, Blackbird serves everything from coffee, pastries, cakes and pie (whole or by the slice), house made granola, seasonal soups, fresh bread, and TOAST! Holidays and special occasions are handily dealt with courtesy of their special orders. Adjacent to Blackbird is Madrone Lane where you will find tables with umbrellas – but no cars.

Cups Espresso

Indoor casual dining when allowed, also a few outside tables. Recently expanded their menu selections for breakfast and lunch, added wine, beer, and ice cream. Grab a cup and a sandwich for an impromptu picnic at nearby Waterfront Park. I like the energy bites on the go!

Bainbridge Island Coffee SHops

Pegasus Coffee House

Charming old building located down by the waterfront. Offers indoor and outdoor seating on a small patio with space heaters. Friendly staff and scratch made healthy foods. An Island institution since 1980.

Coquette Bake Shop

The cutest and most dangerous kiosk you have ever visited, Coquette is my absolute favorite bakery on Bainbridge. Located in Winslow Mall, set back from the street, and there is always a line. It takes all of my willpower to stay away from Coquette and now that Windermere has opened our new office right across the street… see you in line.

Town and Country Market

Affectionately known to locals as T&C; Town and Country is a full service grocery store. There is a coffee shop inside, as well as a pizza oven, sushi bar, and more. It’s very convenient (and delicious) to grab a few things to go when you are on the run.

Hitchcock Deli

Chef, Owner, and James Beard Award winner Brendan McGill, owns and operates 3 restaurants on Bainbridge Island.  At Hitchcock Deli you can get fresh brewed specialty coffees all day. The chef has also started a street food smoking option for lunch, and there is often a line on weekends.  Hitchcock is in the heart of town on Winslow Way on the south side of the street.

Commuter Comforts

Sometimes catching an early morning ferry means not having enough time to make coffee, or plenty of extra time for coffee because you didn’t make it on the last boat. Service is swift with a smile to get you on your way, and offerings include baked goods and cold drinks.

Center of the Island | Off the Beaten Path

Storyville Roasting Studio

Storyville’s Bainbridge location is in the Coppertop Industrial Building off Sportsman Club road. Equal parts roasting facility, coffee shop, and self-described creative space and gallery; it is a unique experience.

Carley’s Rolling Bay Café

Rolling Bay Café has been a part of this community for many years. It is attached to the Building housing Bay Hay and Feed and the Rolling Bay Post Office. It is a small community coffee shop serving baked goods, soups, and sandwiches. Grab a cup and stroll through Bay Hay and Feed shop, garden store, and fresh farm grown grocery section. A charming place to spend a little time and find something surprising that you can’t live without.

Starbucks

For those who prefer the company they know, there are 2 Starbucks on Bainbridge Island – both in the Safeway shopping center.  There is a proper coffee shop at the South west corner of the parking lot, and a Starbucks kiosk inside Safeway.

Southend | Lynwood Center

Market Place Coffee Bainbridge Island

The Market Place at Pleasant Beach

The Marketplace is a neighborhood gathering spot for meeting family, friends, and neighbors. Their coffeehouse, delicatessen and tap room offer a wide variety of quality food and drink – all with an emphasis on local. Located in Pleasant Beach Village, this open-air shopping center offers a multitude of dining options, lodging, and services. It is also the home of PAWS where I personally have adopted 2 cats!

SUNRISE DRIVE | ROLLING BAY NEIGHBORHOOD

The Rolling Bay Neighborhood is north of Manitou Beach and on the east side of the Island. The main thoroughfare is Valley Road, where you will find the commercial services in this quaint area. Rolling Bay is a mix of older farm homes on larger lots and new, modern homes in the last 2 years with amazing views of Puget Sound, Murden Cove and Mt. Rainier. You can still find homes in this neighborhood with cows and sheep, and plenty of gardens.

At the core of the local services is Bay Hay and Feed, a locally owned company on Bainbridge Island since 1979 when Howard Block and Ce-Ann Parker purchased the 1912 building. This thriving local store is home to a great garden store, a resident cat,  clothing, gifts, pet supplies, organic foods and more.

Arms Around Bainbridge Island

Arms Around Bainbridge Island

Arms Around Bainbridge began in 2007 with seven friends, a 30-mile swim around Bainbridge Island and one goal: to provide financial and emotional support to a friend as she battled ovarian cancer. Since it’s inception, Arms Around Bainbridge has grown to feature bicyclists, rowers, and walkers.

I had the pleasure of participating in the Arms Around Bainbridge fundraiser. Believe it or not, a revolving team of hearty swimmers take to the open water – most in wetsuits, some not! Participants swim the perimeter of Bainbridge to raise money for people in our community who are battling illness.

Bainbridge Island

I volunteered as a kayaker to guide swimmers out of seaweed, jelly fish, and to the most direct route. I accompanied 2 sets of teams and my paddle took me from the northwest side of the Island, under the Agate Pass Bridge, past Point Monroe to Fay Bainbridge Park, where a new team took over.

Arms Around Bainbridge has disbursed over $500,000 and 90% of donations directly support beneficiaries. Arms Around Bainbridge is an all-volunteer 501(c)(3) organization with very few expenses.
